E. W. Sederburg Family

Sven Edward Wilhelm Sederburg was born Feb.23, 1876 to Andrew and Christina Sederburg.  He was the oldest of nine children (E.W. 1876, Frank 1/1878, Emma 3/1880, Eddie  4/1882, Alex  3/1884, Agnes  3/1886, Delia  2/1888, Edith  3/1893, and Wilma  9/1897).   Sven Edward, known as E.W., William or Willie, married Hilma Eleanora Wenstrand on Dec. 15, 1897.

Hilma Wenstrand's parents were Sven Gustaf Wenstrand and Elizabeth Marie Anderson.

Education and the church was very important to the Wenstrand family.  Sven Gustaf and his family soon established the elementary school near their log cabin.   He also was a founding member of the Mission Covenant Church in Nyman, Iowa.  Sven's brother Anders Eric was a lay preacher for the Mission Covenant Church.

Elizabeth was Sven Gustaf's second wife.  His first, having died in Sweden.   Hilma was one of three girls born to Elizabeth.  She had six half brothers/sisters born to Sven Gustaf's first wife.

Hilma Wenstrand and E.W. Sederburg grew up together in Fremont, Twp. Page County, Iowa.  They attended the same elementary school (Green Park, Fremont Dist. #1).  Their families lived near each other.  (for a  wonderful discussion of this part of our history see "Wenstrand, A Chronical of Family Roots from Sweden, 1775 to the United States of America, 1993 by William Wenstrand)  The Sederburg family and the Wenstrands shared many experiences.

Uncle Lyle Sederburg claimed their marriage was "arranged" by their parents.  However, no other evidence of that claim exists.  They were married for 67 years and sired ten children.

While living for a short time in Fremont Township (according to 1900 census) and near Coberg Iowa, E.W. and Hilma moved to Frankfort Township, just east of Red Oak, Iowa. There they rasied 10 children. 

The oldest child was Elnora Marie Christine Sederburg (B. 1889)  She was followed by Edna Myrtle Cecelia (B. 1900) and Harry Emory Willard Sederburg (B. 1902)  Following Harry in birth order were Edward Reuben Myron (B. 1905), Marion Ebnor Newton (B. 1907), Lyle Gustaf LeRoy (B. 1909), Erwin Wilbur Orland (B.1912) , Hilmer William (B. 1914) , Milo Elton Wilson (B. 1923), and Doris Mae (B. 1921.)   Doris Mae died at the age of one.

Nora (Elnora - B. 10-20-1889) and Elmer Palmquist - Nora was raised on the family farm near Nyman, Iowa.   She later attended Pleasant Lawn school north of Frankfort, Iowa when her parents moved to Montgomery County.  She met Elmer while attending Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, Iowa.   They married in 1921 and had one surviving daughter, Fern.

 

Elmer Palmquist was born near Stanton Iowa on Feb. 2, 1900.  The Palmquist family was well known in Southwest Iowa.

Myrtle  (Edna Myrtle Cecelia) was born Oct. 13, 1900.  She and Paul Peterson were married on June 1, 1921 in Stanton, Iowa.  Paul and Myrtle farmed on a number of plots surrounding the Stanton area.  Together they had six children:   Helen Marie was born Sept. 12, 1922.  She married Carroll Pendgraft of Essex Iowa.   Dorothy Pauline Peterson married Levi Lantz in 1925.   LeRoy William was born Jan. 6, 1928.  He did not marry and lives in Stennett Iowa.   Paul Allen was born July 31, 1934. He did not marry and currently lives in Stennett, Iowa.   Carrol Davd was born Feb. 7, 1938.  He married Lois Adams from Ft. Smith Arkansas.  Caroll David has his Ph.D. and is presently teaching in Maryland.  Larry Donovan Peterson was born Jan. 4, 1941.    He is presently retired.
Lyle Gustaf LeRoy and Helen Marie Crowe lived on a number of farms near Red Oak, Iowa.   Lyle, born August  8, 1909 was the family story teller and oral historian.   Helen and Lyle and four children, Lila Mae, Hilma Marie, Harold Lee, and Richard Lee.  

 

Helen Marie and Lyle are deceased.

Harry Emory Willard Sederburg and Stella Mae Haymaker Sederburg were married on Sept. 29, 1922.   Harry disappeared without a trace sometime following the birth of their second son.   My father, Marion, described Harry as "the wild one" within the family. 

 

Stella moved to Missouri where she farmed until moving to Iowa.  She took into her home a ward of the state who was thought to be mentally retarded.   The young man later became successful.   A movie starring Mickey Rooney was made about the student's life.

 

Stella and Harry had two sons, Miles Owen SEderburg (B -7-30-23) and Marvin Harry Sederburg (B- 7-06-26).

 
Erwin Wilbur Orland Sederburg  and Marjorie E. McIntyre were married on Nov. 2, 1935.  Erwin spent the largest block of his employment with Moorman Mfg. Company as district manager.   Marjorie McIntyre Sederburg has been very active in the social life of Red Oak, Iowa.

 

Erwin and Marjorie had three children, Curtis Delaine, Ronal Dennis, and Janice Maurice.   Erwin died in 1981.  Marjorie lives in Red Oak, Iowa.

Hilmer William Sederburg and Iola Nadine Pearson were married in 1944.  Hilmer served in the U.S. Marines during the war doing his service in Guadacanal, British New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, the Islands of the Hebrides and Brisbane Australia.  Upon leaving the military he took up farming near Red Oak, Iowa.

Iola was from Schickley, Nebraska.   She and Hilmer had ten children (9 surviving).  The surviving children are Russell William, Wanda Ann, Phyllis Elaine, Kay Louise,  Kathleen Rene,  Ilene Rae, Joy Annette, Kelvin Bryce, and David Scott.

 

Milo Elton Wilson Sederburg and Blanche Lucille Shaeffer were married on Dec. 9, 1944.  Milo worked for Van Naudsdale and McCunn and then farmed on land near Red Oak, Iowa.  They had four children, Virginia Lea, Betty Jane, Linda Ann, and James LeRoy.

 

Blanche Sheffer was raised on a farm near the Sederburg farm in Frankfort Tonwship.  Blanche was a bookkeeper for Pamida Dept. Stores for twenty years.  They currently live in Omaha, Nebraska. 

Marion and Viola Amy Shalander Sederburg were married on May 23, 1939 in Omaha, Nebraska.   Viola is the only daughter of Albert and Tillie Shalander.  She grew up in Hamill South Dakota.  She met Marion while a student at Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska.

Marion and Viola had three children.   Donna Mae married Arthur Ogle of Mankato, Minnesota.   Darlene Viola married Steven Kuhlman of Mankato, Minnesota.  William Albert married Joyce Witte of Ludington, Michigan. 

Edward Rueben Myron Sederburg and Bertha Ross Sederburg were married July 6, 1927.   They farmed in Southwest Iowa for their entire lives.   Bertha, born July 17, 1910 was the daughter of Conrad and Susan Ross.  The Ross family emigrated from a German colony in Russia in 1902.  They lived in a small section of town in Red Oak, Iowa where other Russian Germans lived.  Bertha had 6 sisters and 4 brothers.  The family later moved to a farm near Red Oak.

 

Bertha and Ed had three children, Wayne, Lois and Karen.  Bertha lives in a nursing home in Stanton, Iowa.
